Dr Nicholas Sowden - North Brisbane Cardiology

Nick obtained his medical degree from Griffith University in 2012 after first completing a BA at UQ. He completed his Internship and physician training at The Prince Charles Hospital. Subsequently he started Cardiology Training at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s and The Prince Charles Hospitals with rotations to the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast University Hospitals. He obtained his Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of Physicians in 2020, and then undertook a fellowship in Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant at TPCH in 2021. Since 2022 he has been working as a consultant as part of the Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Team at TPCH. He also participates in the Indigenous Cardiology Outreach Program (ICOP) delivering specialist care to regional and remote indigenous communities. Nick has presented at local, interstate and international conferences and is currently undertaking further research in acute heart failure management. He is a Lecturer with UQ and takes regular student tutorial groups as part of internal medicine teaching. He has also completed a Masters Degree in Public Health to complement his Cardiology training. He is a member of the Cardiac Society of Australia and NZ (CSANZ) and the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). Nick’s interests are in general cardiology, preventative and metabolic cardiology, heart failure and advanced heart failure management with an emphasis on high value and efficient interventions.
Dr Stephen Tomlinson

Dr Stephen Tomlinson is a general cardiologist with advanced training in echocardiography. He is an expert in non-invasive evaluation of chest pain, breathlessness, arrhythmia, and valvular heart disease. Dr Tomlinson graduated from Bond University in 2011 with the Vice Chancellor’s award for academic excellence. He achieved Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians in Adult Cardiology in 2019 after appointments at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and Prince Charles Hospital. He performed a two-year echocardiography fellowship at The Prince Charles Hospital before undertaking further subspecialty training in valvular and structural heart disease at the world-renowned Columbia Structural Heart and Valve Centre at New-York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr Tomlinson has completed a Master’s degree in medical research in which he pioneered novel techniques for non-invasive assessment of heart failure. He has published multiple peer-reviewed papers and regularly lectures at local and international conferences. Dr Tomlinson is a dedicated clinician who is at the forefront of his field and is a passionate advocate for his patients care.

Queensland Cardiology aims to provide the highest level of care for individuals with heart disease. Our outpatient facilities provide exercise and Dobutamine stress echocardiography, resting echocardiography, ECG and holter monitoring, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and head up tilt testing. Inpatient care is provided at the St Vincent's Northside Hospital which adjoins our rooms and provides the full array of cardiac nursing care, coronary angiography and angioplasty, interventions for structural heart disease including balloon valvuloplasty and septal defect closure, electrophysiology and pacing, automatic defibrillator implantation and trans-oesophageal echocardiography and cardioversion. Patient’s can also been seen at St Andrews War Memorial Hospital. We are also strongly associated with the hospital’s cardiac surgeons and the intensive care unit. We aim to continually improve our efforts through research and training and have an ongoing commitment to the education of general practitioners.
