Dr Jonathan Shin graduated from the University of Queensland, where he completed his studies in Bachelor of Dental Science with Honours. In his early days as a dental practitioner, he has spent his time refining his skills in general dentistry while providing service to dental hospitals at the Metro North Hospital and Health Service and Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Community Centre, as well as briefly spending some time working rurally for a satellite dental clinic in Dalby. After three years of working in the public sector in Queensland, Jonathan decided to relocate to Sydney in order to pursue a career in private practice to further enhance his scope and skills in cosmetic dentistry. While Jonathan enjoys all aspects of clinical dentistry, he has a particular interest in restorative and cosmetic dentistry including prosthodontics (crowns/bridges) and periodontics (gum health). He is also a keen advocate of preventive dentistry through oral health education and lifestyle/dietary advice, promoting patients' awareness of their own dental conditions and applying healthy lifestyle habits to ensure that patients can become confident in the decisions they make throughout their dental journey while effectively minimising risks of encountering the unexpected or stressful dental visits in the long term. As someone who has experienced the dreaded 'dental phobia' from a young age, Jonathan has developed a genuine appreciation of the emotions and stresses that may be involved with dental visits from a patient's perspective, and most importantly, that our objectives as dentists should be focused on treating a person and not just a tooth. Hence, he always takes his priority to actively communicate with his patients and keeping them well informed throughout their appointment to defuse any potential anxiety triggers while encouraging them to become more consciously engaged and motivated to start taking ownership of their own oral health. Drawing on his previous experiences as an academic tutor before transitioning into his dental career, Jonathan greatly values the importance of education and keeping up to date with the contemporary literature and technologies to ensure patients are always receiving the highest standard of care supported by evidence-based clinical practice. Hence, he regularly devotes a significant portion of his time each year to continuing education through a diverse range of sources including journals, lectures, seminars, workshops, and conferences. Jonathan also enjoys identifying and providing advice on areas where patients can actively work on improving their oral health tailored to each individual's goals and needs, while also breaking down and presenting clinical findings and treatment options in ways that can be easily understood and relatable from the patient's perspective. His calming and amiable demeanor also helps patients feel comfortable throughout the appointment without feeling intimidated or judged. Outside of work, Jonathan is an avid coffee enthusiast who is always on the lookout for new cafes and coffee beans to try out during his spare time. Following the lockdown days of COVID-19, he has found a newfound mission in staying fit and active through regular training workouts at his local gym. During the weekends he usually finds himself making impromptu trips to exploring places to eat, practicing the drums in playing sessions with his friends, or just simply spending some quiet time at his local cafes while relaxing over a cup of coffee.
